EcoVero, Ozone treatment and FHSA (Federal Hazardous Substances Act)

What is EcoVero

EcoVero™ is a more sustainable viscose made using sustainable wood from controlled sources: FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Program for Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) certified in Europe, instead of bamboo or eucalyptus, which is commonly used in normal viscose production.

What are the benefits of EcoVero TM fabrics?
Made from purified cellulose, EcoVero™ fiber is produced from specially processed wood pulp and is often compared to silk and cotton.
• Natural and renewable
• Sustainable
• Biodegradable
• Gentle on the skin
• 50% lower emissions and water impact than generic viscose
• Lenzing certified

Once little more than a substitute for natural silk, rayon is starting to look a lot like the material of the future. EcoVero, its latest iteration, is an eco-friendly fiber that outperforms not just synthetics in terms of environmental responsibility, but many natural fibers as well.

What is EcoVero
Rayon, or viscose, has always had the potential to be an ecological player. Made from regenerated cellulose, it can come from practically any source that contains that material – wood, recycled cotton, even rayon itself.
Our post on the many faces of rayon discusses the production process in detail, but, in a nutshell, cellulose for rayon usually comes from wood and there are a number of ways to produce the fiber itself. The original, and simplest, way is not terribly ecological, because it generates waste products that are never reused. New methods recuperate the chemical substances at the end of the manufacturing process to feed back into the system, so waste is eliminated. Companies are also learning to tap truly renewable resources, such as wood from sustainably managed forests.
Innovations at Lenzing
The Austrian company Lenzing specializes in rayon and has been striving to innovate their production methods for a number of years now. It was Lenzing that brought us Tencel, a type of viscose fiber (lyocell or modal) derived from sustainable wood sources. The water and solvents used in production are almost entirely recycled, no chlorine bleaching agents are applied and ecological pigments are used in the dying process.
Tencel can also be made using a technology called Refibra, which makes it possible to gain cellulose from cotton, for example from cotton scraps discarded by the garment industry.
Lenzing takes environmental responsibility seriously, implementing waste reduction measures throughout its manufacturing network.
Lenzing EcoVero
The viscose fiber EcoVero sets even stricter environmental standards than Tencel. In terms of water and chemical consumption and its carbon footstep, EcoVero is the most ecologically responsible textile out there, surpassing not only other types of rayon, but cotton as well. Supply chain transparency is maximized, from the farming of raw materials, through production, to distribution.
EcoVero is fully biodegradable and compostable. It is easy to recycle (it can be recouped to produce new viscose fibers), but if it does end up in a landfill, it will biodegrade entirely in several months without releasing any toxic chemicals into the soil.
In terms of its fiber qualities, EcoVero resembles other premium rayons: Fine, soft, breathable, very comfortable, good at wicking away moisture, and relatively quick drying. In terms of care, it can be washed, dried, and ironed just like other rayon fabrics.

About Ozone treatment
Application
The ozone gas has so strong oxidizing power that it is used for sterilization, deodorization, bleaching or other purposes. The ozone gas has several advantages such as simplification structure of the ozone gas decomposer and has been used in many fields because it can be decomposed into oxygen by itself. Examples of use are below.

1. Advanced water treatment at the waterworks (mold odor removal)
2. Sewage sterilization and waste water treatment from various plants (COD and BOD reduction)
3. Sterilization of the water used at the aquarium or the fish farm
4. Sterilization of the water used at the pool, the bath, the gym or so on
5. Sterilization and cleaning of food-related fields
6. Sterilization and cleaning of medical-related fields
7. Air (indoor) deodorization and sterilization (Remove Germ )
8. Pulp bleaching (Decolorization)
9. Ballast water (vessels) treatment
10. Cleaning in the field of electronic devices manufacturing

Principle of ozone gas generation

Silent discharge

The ozone gas is generated by applying high-voltage through dielectric between electrodes and supplying air or oxygen. The electrode structure is circularity and creeping discharge, and the ozone gas can be generated from low concentration to high concentration, however, the concentration is subject to change, depending upon voltage, cooling system, electrode structure, raw gas or so on.

Electrolysis
Being a method for generating ozone gas by electrolyzing ultrapure water, it enables obtaining ozone gas with high concentration (14 wt. %) and high purity – without metal impurities and particles, by employing IEMs and anodes with catalyst for generating ozone gas. At the same time, high purity H2 gas is generated as well, therefore effective use of hydrogen gas is also possible.

The Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) requires precautionary labeling on the immediate container of hazardous household products to help consumers safely store and use those products and to give them information about immediate first aid steps to take if an accident happens. The Act also allows the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ban certain products that are so dangerous or the nature of the hazard is such that the labeling the act requires is not adequate to protect consumers.
Where can I find the requirements for chemicals and other hazardous substances?
The FHSA is in Title 15 of the United States Code, starting at section 1261. Rules that tell you the requirements of the act, how to determine whether a product requires labeling, what labeling is required for specific products, and what products are banned are published in the Code of Federal Regulations in Title 16, Part 1500. Because the Commission may add new rules from time to time, we recommend that you periodically check for new or revised rules in the Code of Federal Regulations. You can obtain the regulations issued under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, 16 C.F.R. Part 1500, and any other regulations referenced in this summary from the Commission’s Web Site at: https://www.cpsc.gov.
How do I determine whether a product requires labeling?
First, the FHSA only covers products that, during reasonably foreseeable purchase, storage, or use, may be brought into or around a place where people live. Products used or stored in a garage, shed, carport, or other building that is part of the household are also covered. The Act requires hazardous household products (“hazardous substances”) to bear labeling that alerts consumers to the potential hazards that those products present and that tells them what they need to do to protect themselves and their children from those hazards. Whether a product must be labeled depends on its contents and the likelihood that consumers will be exposed to any hazards it presents. To require labeling, a product must first be toxic, corrosive, flammable or combustible, an irritant, or a strong sensitizer, or it must generate pressure through decomposition, heat, or other means. Second, the product must have the potential to cause substantial personal injury or substantial illness during or as a result of any customary or reasonably foreseeable handling or use, including reasonably foreseeable ingestion by children.
